Message from the AHS President
Well not the rear view we might have expected only a week ago, but the Varsity forged through the last week with a competent 12 -4 victory in San Antonio sandwiched between two unfortunate losses to two very well manned teams: on the 5th we suffered a 9 -12 setback to Westwood on the Warriors home field and their Senior Night and yesterday on a warm blustery Sunday afternoon we gave Plano West reason to smile on their 3.5 hour trek back north allowing them a 10-8 win.

The Plano West hosting was our sole appearance on the Anderson High campus, our effort somewhat reflecting the condition of the oft used practice field, notwithstanding thus we appreciated the opportunity to show our colors and defend "Our House". The JV tracked a similar record but turned in a solid performance to beat Westwood JV 10-5. My two cents: with our high level talent & skills, when we show up mentally and harken to the coaches guidance... we win.

On an important-side note I was impressed with our recent fundraisers: Saturday's wonderful player turnout for the final coupon drive planned and implemented by Suzanne Pena with important assists from Robyn Nutt, Cathy Reynolds, Kris Stauffacher, Angela Nash and Coach K.  Another Fundraiser effort, the AHS Team Lacrosse posters turned out great.  We are on track, if we sellout, to garner potentially $400 - $600!  Special thanks to the Anderson Yearbook Class for the design and ColorSciences (owned by past lax parent Jim Burns) for printing. We as a club have worked hard in the oft uncomfortable area of raising funds and our effort has put the club in good position to meet financial obligations and support our Coaches and players come Fall Ball 2011.

Two nights hence it is the Trojans verses the Maroons (?) at 8:00 PM/House Park. I am conjuring the vision of a good 'ol Dagwood sandwich with a win giving us that final layer of a nice four stack... L/W/L/W

President's Message:

I wish I could take a moment to figuratively stroll through the high cotton that is our current combined win/loss records for the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams (an aggregate 14 - 4)... but there are several reasons I will not (although I kind of just did).

First, have you notice how much bigger Coach K is than me? He'd be chasing me down the street if he caught me getting ahead of our schedule... oh,yes the schedule: Tuesday the 5th we have a date with power house Westwood on their turf. The Warriors are District I undefeated including a 9 - 7 victory over Austin High. The game has now become..."the clash of the zero loss entities"! [I have got to come up with a better tag line...]; A side history note: we've never come out on top against Westwood on the Varsity level.

Last, thanks to all who showed up at the Mangia Bowl this past Saturday. Our Varsity was victorious against a St. Stephens team still trying to meet the standards of first year Coach Noah Fink, former UT Head Coach. This was their first appearance in the Mangia Bowl and, hopefully, the start of a long rivalry. Special thanks to Laura Weaver and her NWAYLA crew for making the half time competitive with the Bantam players scrimmage. Based on the stick skills displayed, our Anderson future looks bright. Now lets get out there and enjoy our 80 degree 80 percent humidity weather!

Letter from the AHS president, Greg Weber:

What a dominating start to our District DI play with both our Varsity (16-6) and Junior Varsity (6-4) posting wins against Bowie this past week. The games were played in Georgetown and only after a yo-mans job by our Head Coach K to secure the site after House Park, our typical "home" site was pulled on short notice.

I thought for a minute we'd be playing under a running clock with "Wayne's World" street rules in play. Bowie came in with a 3-1 record having taken Plano West in a 7-6 game with one loss (Coppell). This Thursday, the 10th, its St. Andrews at House Park (here's hoping) with the JV playing at 8 PM AFTER the Varsity at 6. I predict a beautiful evening to come out and support our teams. A special note that NWAYLA has started the season at all levels; please take a moment when convienent to stop by MMS and say hi to the coaches/players/parents... they are our future! Last I want to bring up recent player issues with suspensions due to grades or mis-conduct. I've been surprised by the level of these issues but am confident parents and especially Coach K have addressed them appropriately and we'll be stronger having delt with them individually and forthrightly... and when we get to full roster.

I almost feel this is all I want to write this week; 10 - 8.
Our Varsity played to its potential, or at least to my hope, and beat Strake Jesuit Sunday afternoon by that score on the opponents home field in Houston. We probably all know this is the same team that unceremoniously knocked us out of our first playoff off appearance last May. Our team was down a good handful of players (6) and we're built this year to use that depth, but no one backed off. We played hard to the end in the first game; Friday against a very good Houston Christian team, and this is what was taken from that contest: that we didn't falter physically nor mentally. It was just like that fantastic 1980 Gloria Gaynor song: "I got all my life to live, I've got all my self to give: I'm alive... and I'll survive; I will survive... Hey, Hey!! So we come out Saturday lookin' to match the JV and split our two games. Not settling for best effort we play to win and we did. Probably biggest win in our long history. We have got to recognize Coach K and his Varsity and JV coaching staff... great job.
The JV showed the promise we all know is there, played a solid couple of games from a skill perspective against two good teams. We are working to gain the consistency needed for Varsity play someday, but it's not expected yet. As long as we're improving and not making the same mistakes (mixed in with wins) we're on track.
One of our players went down with an injury and we wish him the best and a speedy recovery. He's got athleticism and youth on his side (YO! Chris!). Not only did the players perform well on the field, their hotel behavior was exemplary. The hotel staff noticed, as well as a hotel guest who commented to Robyn Nutt: "I am a teacher and have taken a lot of trips with students. Your boys have the best "Hotel Manners" I've ever seen. You should be very proud of them." WE ARE!!!.
Also a big thanks to all the parents, family and friends who made the effort to attend the game(s), as well as Jeff Sayers and Mangia for planning and implementing a great breakfast send-off Friday morning.
...I've always wanted to reference that song.

LAX SEASON IS FINALLY HERE:

After a long off-season, which included many clinics, round-ups, camps, and tournaments, Lacrosse in NW Austin is stronger than ever.  We now have 3 1st/2nd grade teams, a big 3/4th grade team, 2 very strong 5/6th grade teams, and a huge 7/8th grade team- 2 more teams than last year. The momentum is tremendous and NWAYLA is at the center of it.

Check out the links to the game schedules and check out our NWAYLA Trojans throughout the season.
